Combustion of available fossil fuel resources sufficient to eliminate the Antarctic Ice Sheet
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Antarctic Ice Sheet stores water equivalent to 58 m in global sea-level rise. We show in simulations using the Parallel Ice Sheet Model that burning the currently attainable fossil fuel resources is sufficient to eliminate the ice sheet. With cumulative fossil fuel emissions of 10,000 gigatonnes of carbon (GtC), Antarctica is projected to become almost ice-free with an average contribution to sea-level rise exceeding 3 m per century during the first millennium. Consistent with recent observations and simulations, the West Antarctic Ice Sheet becomes unstable with 600 to 800 GtC of additional carbon emissions. Beyond this additional carbon release, the destabilization of ice basins in both West and East Antarctica results in a threshold increase in global sea level. Unabated carbon emissions thus threaten the Antarctic Ice Sheet in its entirety with associated sea-level rise that far exceeds that of all other possible sources.

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Surface Melting over Ice Shelves and Ice Sheets as Assessed from Modeled Surface Air Temperatures
Summer surface melting plays an important role in the evolution of ice shelves and their progenitor ice sheets. To explore themagnitude of surfacemelt occurring overmodern ice shelves and ice sheets in a climate scenario forced by anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), a coupled climate model was used to simulate the distribution of summer melt at high latitudes and project the future...
متن کاملA movable trigger: Fossil fuel CO2 and the onset of the next glaciation
[1] The initiation of northern hemisphere ice sheets in the last 800 kyr appears to be closely controlled by minima in summer insolation forcing at 65 N. Beginning from an initial typical interglacial pCO2 of 280 ppm, the CLIMBER-2 model initiates an ice sheet in the Northern Hemisphere when insolation drops 0.7 s (standard deviation) or 15 W/m below the mean. This same value is required to exp...

An increasing number of researchers are concerned about a controversial plan by US colleagues to work alongside oil companies to hunt for fossil fuel reserves in the Arctic. The US Geological Survey is lining up a project with BP and Statoil to find oil and gas in the Arctic Ocean, under the auspices of a flagship scientific initiative intended to tackle global warming. Tackling climate change ...

Due to the air pollution crisis and increase in greenhouse gases, emission standards are getting tougher gradually. In the other hand reducing the consumption of nonrenewable resources is one of the main goals of the automotive industries in the world. Using electric propulsion along with internal combustion engine is one of the answers. Different designs of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) have ...
